Empowering Smallholder Farmers in Kakoma and Kiwe

We start this year with the second phase of our seed loan distribution program, which has reached 250 smallholder farmers from Kakoma and Kiwe. This initiative follows the successful first phase, where 200 farmers benefited from the program. Under the program, each farmer receives 5 kilograms of certified rice seeds as a loan and returns 10 kilograms after harvest. Homes Industries then buys the surplus from the farmers, ensuring a sustainable market for their produce. Expanded Reach Through Partnerships Previously, Homes Industries supported only 100 farmers annually. However, with the support of the United States African Development Foundation (USADF). This collaboration has enabled us to support more farmers with certified seeds and access to improved farming techniques. Improved Yields and Practices Last season, farmers under this program recorded impressive yields, thanks to the use of certified seeds and adoption of modern farming practices. At Homes Industries, we strongly discourage seed recycling and encourage farmers to invest in fresh seeds each season to maximize productivity. Sustainability Plan The seed loan initiative operates under a revolving seed fund, where the repayments from farmers are reinvested to purchase seeds for subsequent seasons. This approach ensures that the program remains self-sustaining even after external funding phases out. Looking Ahead We remain committed to empowering smallholder farmers and contributing to food security in Malawi. Building on the success in Kakoma and Kiwe, our next stop for the seed loan distribution initiative will be Nkhata Bay. We look forward to reaching more farmers and making a lasting impact in Malawi.

Reducing Tomato Post-Harvest Losses for Increased Income

As we are still striving to improve the Household Income of Women and Youths in Mpata, our dedicated Extension Officer, Brenda Chitete, recently conducted training at Kakoma Business Centre on the use of solar dryers. This innovative technology allows farmers to preserve their tomatoes for longer, reducing spoilage and enhancing profitability. Initially, the project improving the household income of women and youths in Mpata farmer group through post harvest loss management of tomatoes by October 2024 targeted Mpata EPA. However, due to some challenges, the focus shifted to Kaporo south EPA. This initiative aims to uplift Smart and Msomba farmer organizations by equipping them with skills and resources to reduce post-harvest losses and improve market access for their produce. With these developments, we are excited about the future impact on the livelihood of Mpata’s women and youth farmers. Together, we’re building a more sustainable and profitable agricultural community.
